Unlike a head-up display, these lights could even convey information to pedestrians outside the car, projecting a crosswalk onto the road where markings are unclear.

Although Ford isn't revealing the specific technology used, Chinese researchers have published their study on this technology, concluding that micro-LED technology is the best choice for high-resolution pixel headlamps. However, the legality of having cars' lights display this information is still something that needs to be sorted out with government regulators.

For now, the technology is still in the prototype stage, but its potential value is obvious. Lars Junker, features and software, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems at Ford of Europe, said, "What started as playing around with a projector light and a blank wall could take lighting technologies to a whole new level."
